The Baltimore Province of Redemptorists joins the entire Redemptorist Family in the United States and throughout the world in offering our joyful congratulations and prayerful best wishes to our confrere, Bishop Bruce Lewandowski, on his appointment as the next Bishop of the Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island. Bishop Bruce’s appointment was announced on April 8 in Washington, D.C. by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.
Bishop Lewandowski, a Redemptorist originally from Lima, Ohio, has called the Diocese of Baltimore home since 2016 when he became pastor for Sacred Heart of Jesus/Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Parish in Highlandtown, Baltimore. Before arriving in Baltimore, he served in New York, the West Indies, and Pennsylvania.
With this appointment, he will be leaving his current position as auxiliary bishop of Baltimore which he has held since 2020, as well as his responsibilities as vicar for Baltimore City and for Hispanic Catholics in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
“In countless ways, the people of the archdiocese have blessed my life; I will carry Baltimore with me in my heart and in my prayers,” Bishop Bruce told the Catholic Review.
During his introductory press conference in Providence, Bishop Bruce said, “I have wanted my whole life to be a poor man serving among the poor and a man who is good news for others.” He continued, “I give you my heart and there’s plenty of room there for you. There is space for you. And I look forward to moving forward and journeying with you.”
Bishop Bruce, our confrere and good shepherd, we thank God for your life and ministry among the Redemptorist family and among all God’s people in the Church. As we rejoice in your appointment as the Bishop of Providence, we assure you remain ever close in our hearts and in our prayers that the love of Christ, our Redeemer, and the help of Mary, his mother, continue to bless your life and ministry with trust, with hope, and with joy. †
