“After two years of preparation, on October 11, 1962, Pope St John XXIII called together nearly 5,000 bishops, theologians and observers from other Christian churches, along with a few Catholic religious women, to begin the Second Vatican Council.
“In his opening address, John XXIII declared: ‘Today [the church] wishes to heal with mercy rather than harshness...and hopes to show that she is the loving mother of all – good, patient, full of compassion and kindliness.’
“Note some favourite words of Pope Francis here: mercy, compassion, kindliness. “From day one of his pontificate, Pope Francis – by both word and example – has been calling the church to a renewed commitment to the teaching and spirit of the Second Vatican Council.
“Above all, we have become a church of mercy, concerned about inclusion for all of God’s children. Everybody-- lay people and pastors -- is equally important, but they have different responsibilities, and they carry them out differently. The heart of it is always love.”
